Bible Study (James)

Over the next couple of weeks, we will be reading through the book of James as a church community! If you would like updates and to join in on the conversation, join our Facebook page.

This blog post will have some (free!) suggested Bible studies and Bible reading plans along with additional study material. Feel free to mix and match the resources to cater your Bible study needs.

1. The Book of James with Francis Chan (12-Day Video Bible Study)​​

You can access this Reading Plan on your computer or by downloading the YouVersion Bible app. (Apple | Android) 

This 12-day video Bible study will lead you through the book of James with daily devotionals and readings along with a video each day from Pastor Francis Chan. These videos add in additional theological elements that include historical context and translations of the original text. (For an example, view the video for Day One.)

2. Trash Your Bible - James Bible Study

The name of this website is based on the idea that a Bible that's falling apart usually belongs to someone who isn't. To trash your Bible is to mark it up, write in the margins your thoughts and observations, and to really live in the Word.

This website is based on Bible studies that go book-by-book where you can customize your Bible journey. Each book is divided into a Snapshot video (Part One/Part Two) that explains the themes of the text, the historical setting, the author, and the audience. There are also blog posts that add additional information on the book and concepts to think about as you read through the book.

3. She Reads Truth - 14-Day Bible Reading Plan of James

This reading plan offers a daily devotional along with Scripture readings. These Scripture readings are from James and relevant supplemental Scriptures. This helps you see the connection of similar themes throughout the Bible.

4. Other Resources

To get an overview of the book of James, watch The Bible Project’s video above. You can also visit their web page on James that gives a run down of the book and its centric themes. 

You can read the ESV version of James on their website linked here. An additional feature of using the ESV website is access to a study Bible that provides footnotes for verses. Included in these footnotes and study Bible are helpful historical contexts including The New Testament timeline, the setting of James, an introduction to James, the global message of James, and many more resources. 

The Gospel Coalition website has free access to many courses on each book of the Bible. One such course is a 12-week study of James. This course can be altered to complete one section daily. Each week's text breaks down the passage, places it in the big picture of the Bible, offers reflection and discussion material, discusses not only the Gospel glimpses but whole-Bible connections, and outlines personal implications of each section. 

An excellent study resource to use for more information is the Blue Letter Bible. The link provided is their introduction to James. 

Explore the resources provided and find the right style for you! We pray that these resources offer a way to study the Bible even in the midst of such an unprecedented time. The book of James is especially relevant now.
